The Small Southern California College that is a Giant on the Water

The sport of rowing originated in Ancient Egyptian times. In the United States, it’s referred to as crew. There are hundreds of scholastic universities, which put sculls on the water, but few have the storied history of Orange Coast College in Southern California.

In May, OCC put themselves in a position to continue the Pirate rowing legacy. Although they did not add a 12th NCAA banner, the Pirate oarsman proudly showed the OCC spirit, finishing 4th out of 77 four-year colleges.

For a small school that offers 135 academic programs, Orange Coast College is a giant among the most renowned rowing programs in the country. When the Pirate oarsmen walk into their boathouse, they say, they feel the mystic that comes from hanging 11 national championship banners from the rafters. Orange Coast boasts ten rowers who have navigated their way to national championships and even the ultimate stage at the Olympics.

Orange College has an Alumni & Friends Association that allows every individual who took even a single class stay in touch with other Pirate alumni. Students become lifelong friends through the sense of campus togetherness that is inherent at OCC. The alumni members of the storied Pirate crew program frequently return to campus to show their support for those who continue to row OCC into national prominence.

Orange Coast College was founded just a couple years after the end of World War II and now enrolls roughly 25,000 students each year. Student athletes at Orange Coast follow a tradition of blending an outstanding educational experience with an opportunity to participate in competitive athletics. The Pirate athletic department coordinates a number of men’s and women’s sports. However, crew is where Orange Coast College has made their mark by successfully competing at the highest level of NCAA competition.

Small colleges are excellent places to establish a strong educational foundation. Orange Coast College has a beautiful campus situated in one of the most climate friendly places in the world, Southern California.

Student athletes learn in an accredited learning environment, part of the system of California State Colleges and Universities. A great school with great people and an awesome rowing program as well.
