The Outstanding Work of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is one of the organizations that have been offering tremendous support to foundations that have been established to fight for the rights of immigrants. It currently runs its undertakings in Arizona. The founders of the body are known as Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin.

They are both journalists and co-founders of organizations like Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times. The Lacey and Larkin were arrested on October 18, 2007, after they invested about $3.75 million is a settlement. Maricopa County’s Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, picked them in the middle of the night because they had revealed the truth about a grand jury that was devoted to intimidating any journalists who tried to publish a story about Arpaio.

The grand jury protected Joe Arpaio and issued a subpoena, which demanded that the New Times should reveal the identities of people who read stories about the sheriff on its website. Arpaio worked with his deputies in oppressing immigrants and anyone who fought for their rights. Michael and Jim struggled to defend and advocate for their Fifth Amendment rights for many years during their career.

They filed a lawsuit against the county government and have been following up cases up to the United States Court of Appeals. Various organizations have been offered financial support by the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, and its first beneficiary was the Colibrí Center for Human Rights. The foundation has always been happy about all the affiliation that it makes with various bodies that campaign for the immigrants’ rights. American Civil Liberties Union is recognized as a leading organization in the United States that has been advocating for the rights of the minority. The foundation was launched on 1959 and has established branched across the United States.

The Arizona division of the ACLU has made a lot of accomplishments. In 1960, it filled a case that led to the abolishment of the law that was against multi-racial marriage in the state. The foundations also defended Ernesto Miranda who had been apprehended by the authorities for being a rapist because of the testimony that he gave.

The case led to the creation of the Miranda Warning that the police are obligated to read to any individual before he or she is interrogated. Another major success of the ACLU is the filling of the Melendres vs. Arpaio case where a judge barred Joe Arpaio’s office from executing any unconstitutional policing and immigration laws.

The ACLU has strived to push for the formation of legislations that support the freedom of speech of all laborers. The foundation also went to court to stop the “Papers Please” SB 1070, which has allowed the police in Arizona to execute immigration laws. ACLU is still pursuing various cases in court. History of two Arizona Journalists – Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were doing their jobs when they are arrested by former Sheriff of Maricopa County. The sheriff didn’t like the content that was being published in their paper, the Phoenix New Times, so he had them arrested.

Joe Arpaio was the Sheriff of Maricopa County at the time. He had been the target of the Phoenix New Times for almost as long as he was sheriff. When the Phoenix New Times published an article about a court subpoena Joe Arpaio believed he had them dead to rights. He was wrong. The court ruled that Arpaio violated the journalist’s first amendment rights.

Lacey and Larkin filed a lawsuit again Joe Arpaio and Maricopa County. Even though the case was as black and white as possible, it took over 5 years to complete the lawsuit. Finally, in 2013, they received $3.75 million.

The Phoenix New Times was sold in favor of a more altruistic company. Lacey and Larkin created The Frontera Fund. This foundation provides support to Latinos in the area because that is the group of people that was targeted by Joe Arpaio during his time as Sheriff of Maricopa County. The Frontera Fund works with charities such as 1070 and the ACLU.

A few years later, Lacey and Larkin got back into journalism with Front Page Confidential. The paper picks up where the duo’s previous paper left off: with Joe Arpaio. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are using their journalism skills to make sure Joe Arpaio doesn’t get elected to Congress.
